چکیده

Key words stars: activity – stars: coronae – stars: late-type – stars: magnetic fields – stars: rotation – X-rays: stars Using a new catalog of 824 solar and late-type stars with measured X-ray luminosities and rotation periods we have studied the relationship between rotation and stellar activity that is believed to be a probe of the underlying stellar dynamo. Using an unbiased subset of the sample we calculate the power law slope of the unsaturated regime of the activity-rotation relationship as LX/L bol ∝ Ro β , where β = −2.70 ± 0.13. Notably this is inconsistent with the canonical β = −2 slope to a confidence of 5σ are argues for an interface-type dynamo. Super-saturation is observed for the fastest rotators in our sample and its parametric dependencies are explored. Significant correlations are found with both the corotation radius and the excess polar updraft, the latter theory being preferred as it is supported by other observations. We also present a new X-ray population synthesis model of the mature stellar component of our Galaxy and use it to reproduce deep observations of a high Galactic latitude field. The model, XStar, can be used to test models of stellar spin-down and dynamo decay, as well as for estimating stellar X-ray contamination rates for non-stellar studies.

Evaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies

The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

The Stellar Activity–rotation Relationship and the Evolution of Stellar Dynamos

We present a sample of 824 solar and late-type stars with X-ray luminosities and rotation periods. This is used to study the relationship between rotation and stellar activity and derive a new estimate of the convective turnover time. From an unbiased subset of this sample the power law slope of the unsaturated regime, LX/Lbol ∝ Ro , is fit as β = −2.70±0.13. This is inconsistent with the canon...

A First Look at Rotation in Inactive Late-type M Dwarfs

We have examined the relationship between rotation and activity in 14 late-type (M6-M7) M dwarfs, using high resolution spectra taken at the W.M. Keck Observatory and flux-calibrated spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Most were selected to be inactive at a spectral type where strong Hα emission is quite common. We used the cross-correlation technique to quantify the rotational broadenin...

The stellar activity-rotation relationship revisited: Dependence of saturated and non-saturated X-ray emission regimes on stellar mass for late-type dwarfs

We present the results of a new study on the relationship between coronal X-ray emission and stellar rotation in late-type main-sequence stars. We have selected a sample of 259 dwarfs in the B − V range 0.5–2.0, including 110 field stars and 149 members of the Pleiades, Hyades, α Persei, IC 2602 and IC 2391 open clusters. All the stars have been observed with ROSAT, and most of them have photom...

Rotation and Activity in Late-type M Dwarfs

We have examined the relationship between rotation and activity in 14 late-type (M6M7) M dwarfs, using high resolution spectra taken at the Keck Observatory and flux-calibrated spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Most are inactive at a spectral type where Hα emission has previously seen to be very common. We used the cross-correlation technique to quantify the rotational broadening; six ...
